Okay, so I saw this movie the weekend it came out but I’m lazy and swamped with other work that I’m just now getting to talking about it.
IT WAS FREAKING AWESOME!
*ahem*
So, beyond that, I really enjoyed this movie. It was definitely the movie that should have started my Summer Blockbuster Movie season (instead of that other movie I saw the week before). We took my mom and granny to see it for Mother’s Day because nerd apparently runs in the family. You can’t get away from it! It’s in your blood! I specifically wanted to take my granny to see it with me because she’s the reason I’m a huge nerd for scifi. We used to watch Star Trek: The Next Generation all the time, and she gave me my first scifi book (a collection of “Best of” from sometime around the 50’s or 60’s), even though she doesn’t remember doing either with me. So it was a fun time out for three generations of my fam, and the movie delivered for everyone who went with us (except for my dad, maybe; he’s not big on the Star Trek).

What I really liked about this one, and it’s something that I think they *tried* to do with Wolverine but didn’t pull off, was that they made a movie that works for already established fans but didn’t exclude the rest of the audience. Kind of like the antithesis of Watchmen because that was definitely made for the fans specifically. It was a reboot without pulling a retcon, you know? Chris Pine was fantastically charming and Zachary “Sexy Eyebrows” Quinto was spot on.

Who really surprised the shit out of me (and not because I think he’s a crap actor or anything) was Karl Urban. Where the shit did that come from?! The minute you just hear his voice, before he’s even on screen, you just know exactly who that character is. He was fantastic! The guy who I’ve only seen in all these macho roles, playing Bones? I died, literally. He’s my hero for this role.
The movie looks great. The CGI didn’t feel like CGI. Does that make sense? I hate to keep going back, but with Wolverine the CGI stood out in some places and took my attention away from the story (granted, it wasn’t that hard to pull me out of it) and made me focus on the obvious CGI claws. Here, I was into the movie 100%, and everything looked like it could be real. I even loved the little bit where the dude gets sucked out into space and there’s no sound.
Like I said, this is definitely a perfect start to the summer moviegoing season.

I didn’t think my crush on Zachary Quinto could get any bigger after trudging through 3 seasons of Heroes, then he goes and gets all logical and pointy eared on me.
